Working with wood can be not only an artistic endeavor but a financial one as well.  The nature of the task is hands on so it is important to have the correct tools that are dependable and of good quality. There are a number of woodworking tools classified by characteristics or by their uses.

Measuring and Marking Tools

1)    The protractor is useful for making angles. The measurement is in degrees and they come in semicircles or a circle.
2)    A tape measure comes in a roll of plastic, cloth or metal. These materials add to its flexibility. It can be used to measure curves and corners. The tape measure is used by carpenters, construction workers and tailors.
3)    A ruler is made of plastic, wood or metal and can be used to draw straight lines or measure length
4)    The Combination Square is used to measure right angles and acute angles. It can determine flatness, the center of circular bars or a dowel.
Cutting Tools

1)    Hand Saw

Operated manually, examples of a handsaw are bow saws, coping saws, crosscut saws, keyhole saws

2)    Power saws
This is an electronically power driven or a motorized cutting tool. Some examples are band saw, circular saw, jigsaw, miter saw, table saw and radial arm saw.

Shaping tools

1)    To hollow out an section of wood a router is used

2)    The chisel is used for both cutting and carving

3)    To pierce holes a drill is needed


Assembly Tools

1)    The screwdriver will loosen and tighten screws. Its whole purpose is to remove or insert.

2)    To break objects apart or fit parts or drive nails a hammer is used.



Tools for Finishing

1) Sandpaper will smooth a surface or make it rougher

2)    Brushed of all sizes and shapes are needed to paint, clean or finish surfaces.

Accessory and Furniture Tools

1)    A workbench defined as an elevated table used when occupied with a project is a useful thing.
2)    The sawhorse or a four legged surface can be helpful when tackling a huge block of wood. It gives your support.


The first material the primitive human used was wood and today wood has been subject to a number of creative designs and techniques. The good news is that tools are found almost anywhere to work with wood and it is up to you to be creative enough in your designs.
